Rounding a Point on Currituck Sound

This image really just reminds me of when my father and I would go and canoe together. The last time wasn't more than a few years ago.
Two mice on a canoe navigating threw tall grass and enjoying the bald cypresses.
After they round a point on Currituck Sound, the Water Mice took bearings.
Currituck Sound is located in North Carolina and is part of a series of bays, sounds, inlets, estuaries and rivers that form a broad stretch of inland water about 200 miles long.
This drawing was an attempt to tell a story that centered on an event that wasn't a mishap. The event is the rounding of a point and being met by a broad, open expanse of water where the horizon is largely featureless and navigation is best done with map and compass. It's a long paddle to cross the sound and a difficult job of picking the right channel through the marshes from the many channels that present themselves. Without careful navigation, a long trip can become much longer.

The sound is a beautiful area with marsh grasses, white cedars and bald cypress trees with knobby roots.

  1. The grass in the foreground is very well done! Which of you drew that part?
